Blizzards battle cold in Edmonton

-submitted

Four members of the Blizzard Bike Club competed in the National Cyclo cross Championships and Jim Horner UCI race this past weekend in Edmonton, along with 180 riders from across the country.

Conditions were freezing cold with a light snow and moderate wind on the very technical course.  A steep ramped scaffold bridge was the feature of the course, with riders going up the steep incline and then doing a hair raising decent immediately afterwards.   The ‘cheese grate’ metal decking and some crashes made this feature interesting for the spectators.

Saturday’s National Championship results were:  Pat Ferris 9th in Masters C, Blaine Richter (Grande Praire) was 8th in Masters ‘A’, and Colter Young was 12th in the ‘Under 23’ category.   Stephen Ferris was out at the halfway point of the Elite race with frozen toes.

Sunday’s Jim Horner results were Blaine Richter 4th in Masters A, only a few seconds from a bronze medal, and Pat Ferris was 7th in Masters C.   Colter Young froze out of the Elite race.

Overall it was the Rocky Mountain Bikes duo of Geoff Kabush and multi world Champion Alison Sydor who took the overall Men’s and Women’s Elite titles on both days.
