The Fort St. John Huskies kick off their exhibition season on Wednesday, with a preseason game in Dawson Creek against the Jr. Canucks.
Coach Bob Kalb’s Huskies have a new batch of young talent and will be looking to make it back to the league finals for the sixth time in seven years.
The pups will have a strong batch of returning players this year, including 2008/09 MVP Cody Kalb, and his linemate, 2007/08 NWJHL Rookie-of-the-Year Dylan Apsassin. As well, 18 year-old sophomore sensation Kole Norris will provide secondary scoring punch, though he will be playing without his long-time linemate Steven Fast, who has left the team to attend University in Calgary.
The starting goalie spot is still up for grabs, after the departure of 08/09 revelation Zack Blain. And, with last year’s Captain Jon Spence no longer eligible, the smooth-skating Payden Wongstedt will lead a new-look defensive corps.
The Huskies are also looking for one or two more billets for the upcoming season. If you might be interesting in hosting a Junior Hockey player in your home, call G.M. Vince Pederson, at 250-261-3485.
The 2009/2010 regular season kicks off on September 25th, when the Huskies host their arch-rival Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks.
The Huskies’ annual "Fill the Bus" fundraiser is scheduled for December 6th, while "Skate with the Huskies" is set for December 27th.
September 19th’s home pre-season game will also be a fundraiser for Fort St. John’s Child Development Centre. Admission to the game is by donation, with all proceeds going to the CDC’s "Project Build a Fort", in honour of Terry Norris and long-time Huskies volunteer Tom Ward.
