A 41 year old Grande Prairie Man will serve six years in a federal prison following guilty pleas in April to charges of sexual assault.
Robert David Baxter was accused of sexually assaulting two pre-teen boys, one over the course of six or seven years and was sentenced this week.
The Herald Tribune says the agreed statement of facts in one of the cases described Baxter, as fulfilling a mentor and guardian position, after he befriended a single mother and her 11-year-old son in Grande Prairie, in 2007.
It says Baxter took the young boy for activities and treats and it was not uncommon for the boy to stay the night at Baxter’s residence, in his bed. The boy told his mother Baxter, who was arrested a few days later, was touching him sexually when he woke one morning, in December of 2007.
Meantime, in 2008, a 25-year-old man came forward, alleging a non-consensual sexual relationship with Baxter, spanning more than 300 separate incidents.
In this case, Baxter has never agreed with the number of incidents but according to the newspaper report did admit the relationship.
The abuse began in 1993 or 1994 when Baxter – a family friend – became closer to the boy’s mother, after a failed marriage, starting in Calgary.
