A Fort St. John man has an amazing survival story to tell, after being attacked by a Grizzly bear.

Rory Chapple was bow-hunting on the Kechika River in Northern B.C., when he was charged by a mother Grizzly.

He and a few friends had been on a hunting trip for a few days, but had been rained out for most of the trip.   On Tuesday, he decided no matter what, he was going to head out, and did so alone.

Chapple, the president of the local archery club, was walking along a game-trail he had walked several times before, without ever seeing a bear, when suddenly he heard noise behind him. When the attack happened, he screamed out. He was near enough to his camp that his mates heard him and came running, but by the time they arrived the drama was over.

He isn’t sure if the bear survived.  He says when the bear went down the hill it impaled the arrow further in, but it came out where the bruin turned to run away. [asset|aid=1860|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=1ce23cbb926970afaddb66c83fa05a05-Chapple-windpipe_1_Pub.mp3]

Chapple says he’s been hunting the same area for seven years, and has rarely even seen any bears.   But, while he was unprepared for the attack, he knows he did well to survive.  In fact, he came out of the incident with not a scratch on him, just a bit of a sore back, and some torn pants. He says next time he’s in the bush, he’ll be changing up a few things, and will be a little more prepared.
