This holiday season, all of our Supporters are entered to win an $800 Shopping Spree Giveaway!

This year’s Fort St. John Tax Sale will provide a little more evidence of the recent economic downturn, with numerous properties up for sale.

Highlighting the sale is the Fort Hotel property, at the corner of 100th and 100th.   The property has an upset (minimum) price of $66,748.

Another property, at 10420 100th Avenue has an upset price of $309,450.

The sale auctions off properties on which no taxes have been paid for at least three years, in compliance with the Local Government Act.

In all, 19 properties are up for auction this year, as compared with none last year. The auction takes place at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 28 at the City Hall council chambers, at 10631-100 Street.

A list of the properties up for sale is included as an attachment to this story.

UPDATE: The City of Fort St. John has informed us that the original list for the 2008 sale contained 22 properties.  But, by the date of the sale, on Sept. 29th, all of the properties had their delinquent taxes paid, and so were removed from the list, leaving no properties left at auction.

* Any properties on the list which have their taxes paid before the sale will be taken off the roster.

** Payments from successful bidders are held in trust by the city for a period of one year. If, at the end of that year, the owner still has not payed his or her taxes, the City will make application to Land Titles to transfer the property to the purchaser. If he or she does make payment, the bidder is then refunded his payment, plus interest to the date of redemption by the owner.

*** There may be government liens on properties up for auction. These liens will remain on the title, and will be transferred to the new owner when the deed is transferred.

**** The successful bidder on each property must immediately pay in cash, interac, money order, certified cheque, visa or mastercard, by 3:00 p.m. of the same day. Failure to pay the balance will result in the property being offered for sale again at 10:00 a.m. on the following day.
