Just before 7:30 PM Sunday, a major fire broke out at the Rosenau Transport and Unified Valve on the Alaska Highway.
As of 11pm Sunday night, the Alaska Highway has been re-opened in both directions in front of the fire. The RCMP have also confirmed that people will not be allowed back into the Peace Country Trailer Park until tomorrow. BC Hydro has cut power to the trailer park and states that about 140 units are without power. They do not expect power to be restored to the area until at least 4am Monday. Fire Chief Fred Burrows confirms there are corrosive and potentially toxic materials burning in the warehouse, sending fireballs shooting up to 500 feet in the air.
The fire department has evacuated the Peace Country Trailer Park. There is a reception area set up for the people that have been evacuated at the North Peace Arena. Over 25 families have checked in at the centre. Some will be spending the night a family or friends place, others will be put in a hotel for the evening. The centre will be open all night long if needed. There are approximately 140 trailers in Peace Country Trailer Park.
The FSJ fire department is getting assistance from other local departments, battling the blaze, and trying to ensure some of the trailers inside the Peace Country Trailer Park don’t become engulfed.
We will have more information as it becomes available. If you have photos or video of the fire email firstname.lastname@example.org
