Communities in the North Peace have been awarded just over 66 thousand dollars as part of the Olympic Torch Relay Community Grant Program.
The grants will help support community spirit festivals for the running of the torch relay across the province including through northeast British Columbia.
Fort St. John will get $30,000 for the January 31st 2010 Torch Relay event. The Torch Relay will feature a "Fire and Ice" theme representing all five continents. It will also include live entertainment, martial arts demonstrations, European dance and First Nations drumming.
Fort Nelson will also be getting $21,500 for the Torch Relay celebration on February 2nd, 2010.
Meanwhile, Hudson’s Hope will benefit from $8,000 for a Torch Route Relay welcoming party, and Fort Nelson First Nations will be getting $7,000 for an Aboriginal Torch Relay celebration.
The 2010 Olympic Flame will be lit on Oct. 22, 2009, and handed over to a representative of Canada in Athens, Greece on Oct. 29. The flame will be flown over to Canada and will visit every province and territory in the country. It is expected that it will be carried by approximately 12,000 torchbearers.
