Local boy's SPCA fundraiser this Saturday

It’s been exactly one month since Cole Rafter walked into Fort St. John’s City Hall with a plan to help the animals.

The timid 11 year-old found his inspiration through an online ad from the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The shelter was asking the public for donations. The request must have pulled at Rafter’s heartstrings, because soon after, he decided to hold a fundraiser for the shelter.

The only problem he had was where to start.

So, his mom Terri Rafter took him to City Council and asked for the city’s advice and permission to hold the fundraiser.

After a mini-brainstorm, Rafter left city hall with a list of information and ideas.

Now, this Saturday, a bike-a-thon will be held to raise money for leashes, collars, and even kitty litter.

Even though he has to wait until he is 12 years-old to volunteer at the local shelter, he says he’s getting plenty of practice at home.

He says it’s his goal to raise at least $100.00 for the shelter.

As imagined, the SPCA is more than pleased. In a solicitation letter sent to local business, the SPCA wrote, "it is gratifying to see that, as an 11 year old, he is only too aware of the needs of these animals and is trying, in his own way, to help with their care."

The bike-a-thon is open to everyone and will take place Saturday August 29th at Kin Park. It will start at 10am and should be over by noon. The route begins at Kin Park at 10:15am, and then heads onto the East Bypass Walkway. Riders will make their way down 93rd avenue, and then back to Kin Park for lunch. There will be hot dogs for sale, which will be available by donation.

Pledge forms are available at Ferris Fast Cycles.
