In Northwestern Alberta, a resident has found the remains of an infant buried in his back yard.

The High Prairie RCMP report the man was talking with his neighbour, when he noticed an area of his yard had been disturbed, and found the infant’s body.

The dead child has been transported to the medical examiner’s office in Edmonton and an autopsy will be performed on Saturday.   An RCMP forensic team and major crimes investigators were also called to the scene to gather evidence.

Police say it’s not yet known how long the remains had been buried.

An RCMP release also says the autopsy is needed to determine the age and gender of the infant.
