The Fort St. John RCMP detachment will be working on three priorities to enhance safety within the community.

RCMP Inspector Pat Egan says he met with City officials and members from surrounding communities to identify the most pressing problems in the area.

As the result of his consultations, and the Anti-Social Behavior Meetings, Egan says the RCMP will focus on impaired driving and traffic offences, drug trafficking – with an emphasis on crack and cocaine, and youth safety.

The consultation process included the District of Taylor, Doig River First Nation, Blueberry First Nation, and the Halfway River First Nation. A Crime Reduction Strategy plan has been developed to address community concerns. Egan says the plan focuses on prevention, education, and enforcement initiatives.

Egan says the first step of the process is to make sure that everyone has an understanding of what the priorities mean.

Next, the RCMP will continue to work with the city and the other communities to ensure the objectives are being met. Egan says part of the consultation process is bringing more public awareness to the prioritized issues in the community.

The ongoing dialogue is expected to last throughout the year. Egan says the RCMP will look at statistics in the area, like the number of drunk drivers that are apprehended and the amount of traffic enforcement in the area.

He says the preventative programs will be reviewed, and RCMP members will do things like visit schools to bring awareness to the three priority issues.

The performance plan will be discussed on a quarterly basis, and reviewed every year.
