The Peace River Regional District has put forth a reccomendation to the Province to refuse a proposal from B.C. Hydro to acquire crown land for the Site-C dam.

The Province asked the PRRD for their comments and reccommendations after BC Hydro had submitted a proposal requesting a ten-year license of Occupation on the Crown Land for the proposed project.

If it were approved, B.C. Hydro would use the land to conduct site exploration, and the company would have ‘first dibs’ on the land.

But, Fort St. John Mayor and Director Bruce Lantz says the proposed project is too premature, because an environmental assessment has not even been completed yet.

Lantz says he is also concerned that if BC Hydro acquired the land, it could affect water-based recreation in the proposed zone.

The Regional District was presented three options to consider regarding the decision.

Option 1: The Regional Board should respond to the referral by reiterating the 1981 position that states the Regional District is opposed to the project unless B.C. Hydro provides the proper compensation, mitigation, and monitoring program measures.

Option 2: The Regional Board should notify the OCP that zoning amendments are not required for the Site-C dam.

Option 3: The board should refuse the application.

Local Councilor and Director Lori Ackerman echoed Lantz’s thoughts. She also suggested sending out a letter to B.C. Hydro that states the project is too premature, and that the Regional Board reiterates their 1981 position.

Directors voted unanimously on the refusal, agreeing that the project is too premature to be promised any land.

But, the Province has the final say, and the reccommendations will be forwarded for the Province’s consideration.
