The Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek will be the home to a new ‘Energy House.’

The project includes an 807 square metre building, which will house classrooms and training areas, as well as a community hall.

It will also include a 300KW wind turbine, complete with a training platform and lab.

President of Northern Lights College Jean Valgardson says she expects the new building will recruit students from across Canada.

The LEED certified building will contain state-of-the-art energy technology, including the functioning wind turbine, solar panels, and biomass and geo-exchange systems.

The 7.8 million dollar project in Dawson Creek is one of 11 planned in BC, as a part of the Federal Government’s 2-year, 2 billion dollar plan to repair and expand research and educational facilities at Canadian post-secondary.

Vice President of Finance and Administration Dwayne Hart says Fort St. John’s campus won’t be getting an ‘Energy House’, but there are other opportunities on the horizon.

A joint investment between the Federal and Provincial governments, Prince George / Peace River MP Jay Hill says the construction will create 50 jobs. Work will begin this September, with an expected completion date in summer of 2011.
