The Lido Theatre in Fort St. John will serve an 11 day liquor license suspension beginning July 26th.

In a report obtained through the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch, the establishment was serving liquor while showing live televised events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the Superbowl.

The report says the Lido’s liquor license is event-driven only, and that alcohol may only be served at live events like concerts or comedy acts. But owner of the Lido, Brian Kirschner, says the Lido falls in a “gray area” because he thought Pay-Per-View televised events fall into the live events category.

During the Daytona 500 race, Kirschner says the Lido even had a Master of Ceremonies on stage to host the event. But the LCLB says this still doesn’t qualify as a live event.

Two R.C.M.P. officers testified that on February 1st, the liquor inspector requested that they should attend the Lido Theatre during one of the televised shows. Both officers reported that the Lido was serving alcohol during the televised Superbowl. But, the officers noted no problems during their attendance.

Then, on February 15th, a local liquor inspector went to the Lido during the showing of the Daytona 500. The inspector said the theatre was serving liquor, and that she talked to Kirschner about the violation.

The inspector attended the Lido again on March 7th during the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and saw that the Lido was again serving liquor during the televised event.

Now, the Lido Theatre cannot serve liquor for 11 business days, when liquor would normally be available for patrons. The Lido was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine that was due on Monday, July 27th.
