Fort St. John Cabbie Assaulted

Cst. Passarell talks to the media about the attack.

A 24 year old Fort St. John man is in custody and a cab driver recovering from head wounds following an assault early Monday morning at an apartment complex at the corner of 86th street and 89th avenue.

The RCMP says the attack occurred, at about 4 o’clock, when the cab driver was backing out of a parking lot just after picking up a man, who then allegedly hit the cabbie repeatedly with a metal weapon.

The victim reportedly prevented any further injury, by grabbing the weapon and following a brief struggle, the assailant fled the scene. With the assistance of a police dog investigating officers were able to locate and arrest a suspect, who remains in custody.

Scheduled to make his first court appearance today, he’s charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and obstructing a police officer.

Cst. Passarell says working as a cab driver has its inherent risks. She says drivers should make it aware that they do have transmissions available to their dispatch, and that itself could deter someone from attempting an attack.

The RCMP is now looking for witness information and has yet to establish a motive for the attack and is taking public assistance calls at the local detachment 250-787-8140.
