BC Government closes more bear hunting areas

The Campbell government is reminding hunters that it’s now closed almost two million hectares of the province to hunting for grizzly bears and banned hunting for Spirit bears anywhere in BC.

The newest closures for grizzly hunting are on the north coast. At the same time, the province has closed 120-thousand hectares in several areas to black bear hunting to protect the Spirit bears.

Following amendments last year, the maximum penalty for a first offence conviction, under terms of the BC Wildlife Act, is now $250,000…five times the previous maximum.

In addition, penalties can also include prison time of up to two years…and that’s up four times.
