TransCanada has opened its first community office in British Columbia, in downtown Fort St. John.

To celebrate, the company held an open house and barbeque to get to know the community on Wednesday afternoon.

Project Manager for the Horn River Pipeline Michael Moschopedis says Fort St. John was chosen because of its location.

The company is planning to build two pipelines. The Groundbirch pipeline will be located north of Dawson Creek, while the Horn River Mainline is proposed to be located north of Fort Nelson.

Groundbirch consists of 77 kilometres of 36 inch diameter pipeline located in both Alberta and B.C. It will extend from the existing Alberta system, to the Groundbirch Receipt Meter Station.

Meanwhile, the Horn River project will consist of around 72 kilometres of pipeline. It will transport sweet, natural gas from the Horn River area to a tie in point on the existing Ekwan Pipeline.

Moschopedis says TransCanada is an established company in North America, with an abundant of facilities in Alberta and the U.S. However, the company is relatively new to British Columbia.
