New year-over-year figures, from BC Stats show the province’s sawmills registerd nearly a 20 percent decline in lumber production in May of this year, as compared to the same month in 2008.

Output at Coastal mills dropped the most by more than 27 percent, while output at those in the Interior, accounting for nearly 90 percent of provincial lumber production, was off by nearly 19 percent.

Province-wide shipments and stocks also continued to slide by more than 23 and 11 percent respectively.

Meantime, this is the second and last scheduled week of the Canfor mill curtailment in Fort St. John.

However, the province wide series of shutdowns will run, until the middle of next month, likely removing about 95 million board feet.
