Unemployment takes a big jump in May

The unemployment rate in Northeastern BC took a big jump in May.

 

The current unemployment rate still sits at 8.4% which is an increase of just under 2 per cent increase from April 2009.  One community in the Northeast continues to have the highest unemployment in the province. Dawson Creek has seen another increase to 15.2% from 14.1% in May.

 

In the latest release from BC Stats the Northeast has one of the highest unemployment rates in the province, right behind the Thompson/Okanagan at 9.9% and the Cariboo at 12.9%.

 

If you compare this May to May of 2009 the unemployment rate has increased by 3.4%.  The unemployment rate in April of 2008 for the Northeast was 5.0%.

 

The overall unemployment rate in BC is 7.6%
