A local youth is one of five contestants left in the Global Country Star Search.

18 year old Justin Gies is the only male contestant left in the competition. Gies says that is making him nervous.

Gies will be singing "Proud of the House We Built" by Brooks and Dunn.

The five contestants will be performing with a live band at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton. Those in the audience get to vote on their favorite singer, and a winner will be chosen live on June 15th.

Meanwhile, Gies is the only contestant from British Columbia. He lived most of his life in Fort St. John, but relocated to Taylor with his family several years ago.

He entered the competition after his mother’s coworker suggested that he should.

The winner gets to travel to Nashville, Tennessee, with a chance to visit the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The winner also receives two demo recordings at Powersound Recording Studios in Edmonton.

Gies says even if he doesn’t win, he will continue pursuing a singing career.
