**Update – As of 1:10pm the Highway is now open in both directions after being closed all Sunday morning.

**Update – Highway 2 is now open to single lane alternating traffic.  They expect the road to be re-opened to two lane traffic by 2pm.  Updated at 11:15am

Highway 2 is currently closed from Independent Road to well inside of the Alberta Border because of a gasoline spill.

A semi rollover caused the spill and clean-up crews have arrived on scene and are currently removing contaminants from the spill.  At 10:22pm the Dawson Creek RCMP responded to a semi-rollover just inside the BC border on Highway 2.

The semi-tractor and the B-train it was hauling had gone off road and overturned in the ditch.  The damage from the rollover resulted in a 35,000 litre gasoline tank being punctured.  The punctured tank released an unknown quantity of gasoline into the surrounding environment.

The driver of the semi received a broken ankle from the collision.  He was transported to the Dawson Creek Hospital and treated for his injury.  The driver was unable to explain to investigators why his vehicle left the roadway.

Highway 2 has since been shut down due to the danger posed by the spill.  The highway will remain shut down until later this afternoon when clean-up crews have made the area safe for motorist travel.  According to www.drivebc.ca the road will re-open at 12pm.  There is also a detour in effect 8km north of the BC/Alberta Border.

The Highway is currently closed from Independent Road through to the Alberta Border.
