Expect more delays on the Alaska Highway near the Liard/Smith River Fire.

The fire has grown to over 23,000 hectares in size and today activity has picked up. The area is also experiencing thicker smoke and so they have decided to re-introduce traffic control on the Alaska Highway. With the addition of traffic control, motorists in the area can expect delays.

The fire remains 30% contained and the evacuation alert is still in place for the three communities around the fire. The fire fighters from Ontario that arrived in Fort St. John Friday are now on the scene of the Liard/Smith River Fire.

Also Friday evening fire crews located another forest fire in the same general area. This fire is 50km west of the Liard/Smith River fire and is approximately 80 hectares in size. Fire crews were unable to action or attack the fire Saturday because of aggressive fire activity, but will be attacking the fire all day Sunday.

Weather in the area Sunday is expected to be warm and dry with slight winds, which should help crews.
