The Charlie Lake Fire Department was called to a grass fire Friday evening near Mile 54 of the Alaska Highway.

The call came in at about 5:50pm and at first, the grass fire was small, but grew quickly and at its high point was 35 hectares in size. According to Charlie Lake Fire Chief Al Pinkerton, the fire came close to several homes in the Duanes Subdivision. With the help of the Fort St. John Fire Department, they were able to protect those homes.

Crews were finally able to put the fire out by 11pm Friday night.

At this time the cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated.
