Wildfires in the area are on par with last year’s numbers.
Fire Information officer Jillian Chimko, from the Prince George Fire Centre, says by May 1st of last year, there were 14 fires, and this year the area has seen 15.
However, Chimko says those numbers could increase by the end of the weekend.

She says all of the 15 fires so far this year have been human-caused. Chimko recommends always monitoring grass fires, checking wind conditions, and creating a fire break around the perimeter of the fire area.
She says if these precautions aren’t followed, and a fire gets out of control, the individual responsible could face serious charges.

As of 2:30 pm on Friday, May 1st, there is currently a fire near Moberly Lake. The size of the fire is undetermined but Chimko says it is a smaller fire. Fire fighters are currently monitoring the situation.
