A local woman is receiving a province-wide award that celebrates overcoming adversity.
Fort St. John resident Lori Slater will be heading to Vancouver to receive a Courage to Comeback Award. Slater says she is the first person from Fort St. John to receive the Physical Rehabilitation and Medical Award.

Slater was nominated by the Rick Hansen Foundation, which sent a letter detailing her difficult past. Slater was born with Spina Bifida, which affects the spinal cord. It didn’t take full effect until she was in her 30’s. After undergoing many surgeries, Slater was faced with the reality of using a wheelchair to maintain her mobility.

There will be film crews coming to document her life in the area. Slater says she hopes the coverage will bring a positive change to Fort St. John’s accessibility.
The awards will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver on April 30th.
