The Sierra Yoyo Desan Road will be receiving $187 million worth of upgrades over the next four years.
The road provides access to the Horn River Basin. Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Blair Lekstrom says the road construction will have an impact on Fort St. John. [asset|aid=1102|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=18c07998abc4411e102c75a9292c5c0e-Lekstrom 1_1_Pub.mp3]
The upgrades are expecting to create over 1,100 direct jobs. Lekstrom says every direct job creates two or three indirect jobs. Five years ago, the road underwent a 40 million dollar upgrade to allow for safer transportation.
However, Senator Richard Neufeld says no one imagined how successful the Horn River Basin would become. He says technology has come a long way and industry is benefiting from the Basin. Neufeld says the announcement today will allow the road to be fully paved and operational by 2012. He says construction shouldn’t delay industries that currently use the road.
