NP Oscars finish second at Zones

**Submitted

In one of the most bizarre finishes anyone has seen, the North Peace Oscars fell victim to a much better team on Saturday, losing 91 – 51 to the Kelly Road Roadrunners.  It took a bit longer to complete than most games.  Four minutes into the first quarter with Kelly Road already up by ten points, a put back jam by the Roadrunners big man damaged the basket at Prince George Secondary School.  With repair out of the question it was decided that the game would be completed at another venue.  After packing up everything and everyone, the game was restarted at College Heights Secondary School, about twenty minutes from PGSS up the hill along Highway 16.

It probably didn’t matter where the game was staged.  On this day Kelly Road came with their best game and North Peace had already played as well as they could against Prince George Secondary on Friday.  As if to put some sort of punctuation mark on the victory, the Roadrunners were still running a full court press with under four minutes left in the contest while up by forty points.

"As a team, we’re happy with second.  We came here, played some good basketball, beat a good 3A school (PGSS) twice and extended Kelly Road to their max in our first game on Thursday.  I think our players learned a lot about themselves and about basketball in general.  We are not yet good enough to represent the Zone at the Provincial level … we wish Kelly Road all the best … with some good fortune they’ll win a couple of games.  They are definitely the top team in the North right now."  Assistant Coach Mike Brown was speaking by cell phone as the Oscars bus rolled northward out of Prince George with the expectation of being home near midnight tonight.

The North Peace Ookapiks were second in the girls division finishing behind Prince George Secondary but ahead of Kelly Road and South Peace.  No details of the girls games were available.
