Huskies win in shootout

The Huskies got the job done on Saturday night, as they scored a late goal to tie the game, and then beat the Grande Prairie Wheelers in a shootout.

In a back and forth game, the Huskies were up 2-1 after the first period.  Early in the second, the Wheelers would score two quick goals, to take a lead.  A Cody Kalb goal early in the third tied the game at 3-3, and within minutes, Cody Hilderbrand scored a partial breakaway to put the Huskies back in front.

The lead changes would continue, with another pair of quick goals from Grande Prairie, putting Fort St. John in another hole.  It seemed like time would run out on the must-win game for the Huskies, but with less than ten seconds remaining, and goalie Zack Blain on the bench for an extra attacker, Kole Norris provided the tying goal, sending the game into overtime.

After a dramatic game, there would be no scoring in overtime, and the game would go to a 5 player shootout.

In the tiebreaker, Jon Spence, Steven Fast, and Cody Kalb were successful on their attemps, which was enough to give the Huskies a big road win.

The 2 points are proving vital, as the North Peace Navigators have already won two games this weekend (8-2 over Sexsmith and 6-4 over Beaverlodge) and the Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks have already won once (4-2 over Slave Lake), with another big showdown between the Canucks and Navigators set for Sunday afternoon.

Check back later for more information.

UPDATE: The Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks have beaten the North Peace Navigators 6-2 on Sunday afternoon.  Dawson Creek’s Jason Hisgon led the way, with 3 goals.  The DC win means both the Jr. Canucks and the Navigators earn 4 points on the weekend, while the Huskies earn 2 in their single game.

Heading into the final week, the Huskies still cling to second spot, with 45 points and 3 games remaining (North Peace, Whitecourt x 2), while the Jr. Canucks have 42 points and 2 games remaining (GP, PR), and the the Navigators have 41 points with 2 games remaining (FSJ, DC).
