Harbin, China: A win over host China secured a gold medal for Canada, in the women’s hockey tournament at the 2009 world university games.
In front of nearly 6000 fans, Canada scored a goal in each period, to win the game 3-1. Cecil Lake’s Courtney Unruh scored the winning goal for Canada in the second period, marking a golden end to a fantastic tournament.
Unruh plays her domestic hockey for Ontario’s York University, and will head back to Toronto right after the games.
2009 marked the first time women’s hockey was included in the winter Universiade, meaning Canada takes home the inaugural gold medal.
In men’s hockey, Canada takes on Russia in a rematch of the 2007 world Universiade final, Saturday afternoon (Friday night in Canada).
