Mayor Lantz braved the cold on Tuesday to light the flame in Centennial Park.

The lighting kicked off the 2009 Civic and Community Awards. The theme this year is ‘lighting of the flame’, and ties together many of the events that have taken place over the past year.

The flame was chosen this year because it represents energy, enthusiasm and creativity used to foster good will.

Fort St. John’s Juno nominated singer and songwriter Danya Manning will headline the event.

Categories for the Awards include Athlete of the Year, Artist of the Year and Volunteer Organization of the year.

There are a total of 27 Awards that will be handed out.

The Gala event will be held on Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 at the Pomeroy Hotel. Nomination forms can be picked up at City Hall, or on the city’s website at www.fortstjohn.ca. Tickets for the event will be on sale starting April 1st, 2009.
