The Dr. Kearney Cougars kept their hopes alive this afternoon at the North Central Junior Boys Zone Tournament in Vanderhoof with a one sided 48-22 victory over Fort St. James.
The Cougars were upset in the opening game yesterday by Quesnel Secondary School, but regrouped this afternoon to dispatch eighth seeded Fort St James with ease.
Dr. Kearney head coach Lars Jorgensen reports that his starters played about a quarter of the game. All twelve players hit the score sheet , with forward Graham Spitzer leading the team again, with 18 points.
In what many might call an upset, the Fort Nelson Huskies eliminated the host Nechako Valley Vikings, in overtime, by a 58 – 51 margin. The Vikings sent the game into the extra period with a last second three pointer but couldn’t build on that in overtime as the Huskies turned up their intensity to pull away for the win.
The stage is set for both Dr. Kearney and Fort Nelson tomorrow morning as they continue their battles to stay alive in the eight team double knock out format.
The Huskies lost their opening round game to College Heights of Prince George but stormed back today to sideline their hosts … Tomorrow they will see Quesnel Secondary for an 8:30 AM start time. Dr. Kearney will be watching the late game tonight to see if they get DP Todd or College Heights in the third round. The Cougars tip off at 10:00 AM.
