There’s lots of high-school basketball on tap this weekend, as both Junior and Senior teams head into regional playdowns.

Bert Bowes and Dr. Kearney Jr. High Schools will battle it out on the girls side of the Sharp Instruments Regional Basketball Tournament, being hosted by the Kearney Cougars. Just one girls team will move on from the Sharp Regional, and the Bulldogs will battle the Cougars in a best of three play-off.

Four junior boys teams will fight it out for the two northern berths at the Zones being staged in Vanderhoof (Feb. 21-22). Host Dr. Kearney is hoping to continue their hot form, as they are challenged by Bert Bowes, Fort Nelson, and Chetwynd.

On the senior boys front, the North Peace Oscars will be in Dawson Creek this weekend at South Peace Secondary’s 32nd annual Snowball Invitational Basketball Tournament

The Oscars are the #2 ranked 3A team in the North Central Zone behind defending champion Kelly Road of Prince George.
There are only 4 teams in the Zone who qualify via student population as 3A schools. Prince George Secondary and South Peace are the other two. The Oscars have beaten the latter two teams this season but have yet to meet the Kelly Road side, and presumably that will happen this weekend.

One team will advance from the Zones to Provincials in Vancouver in mid March. The last time (the only time) that a northern school won the Provincials was 1980 when Duchess Park came out on top …

The Sharp Regional tips off at 3:30 PM on Friday with the Cougars meeting the Chetwynd Cavaliers. Bowes and Fort Nelson follow at 5:00 PM and then the girls hit the court at 6:30. The last game Friday evening tips off at 8:00 with the losers of Game One and Game Two vying to see who goes home first.

On Saturday things get underway early. The winners of games one and two hit the floor at 8:30 AM. The winner of that one advances directly to the Championship game at 2:30 PM. The loser is back on the floor at 11:30 AM in an elimination contest with the victor from game three. In the middle of all this, the Lady Cougars and Lady Bulldogs play their second contest at 10:00 AM. If a third game is necessary, the girls are back on the court at 1:00 PM.
