The Senior Flyers are heading into their final weekend of the NPHL regular season, with just two games left to play.
Thursday night, the Flyers will play in Hythe. Fort St. John has beaten Hythe in all three meetings so far this season, but the Mustangs have been an impressive team on their return to the NPHL, posting a 13-11 record with two games remaining, despite playing in the much tougher NPHL West. Their best effort against the Flyers was a 5-2 loss in Fort St. John Dec 27th – a game that was close until the third period.
Saturday night, the Flyers visit Spirit River. The Rangers (18-6-1) boast a fast and physical team by NPHL standards, including Mike Lefley who, at 81 points heading into his final game, will win the NPHL scoring title.
FSJ has already clinched first overall in the league, meaning this weekend’s games aren’t must wins. But, the urgency is building for the Flyers, who are looking to break out of the winter doldrums that seems to have taken ahold of them in the past few weeks.
There’s also few competitive games remaining. After playing Hythe and S.R. this weekened, the Flyers may not get another competitive game until the NPHL finals. After that, it will be another layoff, as they watch Alberta AAA teams raise their games as they compete to reach the MacKenzie Cup.
Coach Adam Brash says he’s looking for the team to turn things around, and soon. "It all starts in practice" he says, "We’ll head to Hythe and get a good road win, by working hard, and just carry that momentum."
Brash is concerned about the lack of competition, particularly for players on the Flyers’ affiliate team, such as Greg Lakovic and Mike Hofstrand, who are ineligible to play any NPHL games. "They’re not in game shape" he admits, "But they are pro hockey players. They’ve played at this level before, and they’ll be skating a lot between now and then."
