Huskies win 3-1 to the Grande Prairie Wheelers

The huskies earned a big win on Friday night, playing a solid road game, and some of their best defensive hockey of the season.

The first period was fairly open, and saw a few penalties called each way, but neither team managed to break onto the scoreboard.

In the second, the Huskies came out firing, scoring two goals just 31 seconds apart, as Dan Pappin watched Kole Norris roof one past GP goaltender Stephane Pelletier, and scored a near-identical goal, to give the pups a quick 2-0 lead.  With 5 minutes left in the period, a questionable slashing penalty to Kyle Porter gave G.P. a two man advantage, which they converted with a nice passing play finished by captain Jeff McVey.

Jason Arnouse was sent off just nine minutes into the game, when he was assessed a two minute minor and game misconduct for hitting from behind.  Late in the second, Michael Podruzny was sent off, after slamming Linden Apsassin into the boards, also from behind.  Linden lay on the ice for several minutes before being helped off – but would return in the third.

The only goal of the third period was scored on Podruzny’s 5 minute major, by Kole Norris, when he walked out from the corner, and again shelfed the puck, for his second of the game, and an insurance marker for FSJ.

The Huskies played solid defensive hockey in the third, forcing starter Zack Blain to make no more than a handful of saves.  Jon Spence led the way, for a defensive squad which came into the game missing 4 defensemen (Wongstedt, Disher, Brinkworth, Pederson).  Brandon Smith had another stellar game on D, while two call ups from the Midget AAA Tracker-Flyers, Owen MacKinnon and David Green, were both solid when called upon.
