Midget AA Flyers lose in Chetwynd

The Tier II Midget Flyers resumed ALL Peace Leage play with a Saturday night game in Chetwynd. The local boys were looking to bounce back from an 8-1 defeat the week before in FSJ.

The game began with both teams exhibiting fast skating and crisp puck movement. The host Chetwynd squad broke the goose egg 8:40 off a loose puck scramble in front of starting netminder Travis McLean.

Undeterred, Fort St. John tallied just 8 seconds later off the face off on a pretty 3 way passing play, Tyson Negus to Brennan Straiger to Sean Ryder for the finish.

FSJ scored again 3 minutes later when Colter Young banged home a rebound resulting from a Brett Young flurry at the side of the net.

Chetwynd responded with two goals in the final 4:50 to take a 3-2 lead into the break. Fort St. John outshot Chetwynd 13-12, neither team was awarded a power play.

Period two started well for the Flyers. After killing a penalty, they tied it up after a solid hit by Tyrell Fenton at the Fort St. John blueline turned the puck over to Brett Young. He outraced the Chetwynd defenders and deposited the puck in the Chetwynd net.

Play intensified and with 2:34 remaining in the frame , Chetwynd was awarded a goal after the puck was knocked in with an obvious high stick. To compound the problem, Fort St. John was penalized twice in the remaining 2 minutes of the period.  The Chetwynd Midgets capitalized scoring once with the 5-3 advantage and again 5 on 4. The period ended 7-3 for Chetwynd, Fort St. John out shot Chetwynd 18-17 but Chetwynd was 3-4 on the Power Play.

The Flyers came out a bit shell shocked in the third period and surrendered 3 goals in the first 3 minutes.  They fought back 3:21 in off the stick of Coulter Young after Adam Bilodeau carried the puck to the front of the net and got a shot off.

Despite their best efforts, the Flyers didn’t score again. The game ended 10-4 Chetwynd.

FSJ outshot their hosts 47-35 . The power play was a telling story as Chetwynd went 3-6 and Fort St. John failed to score on their 18 seconds of power play time.

The Flyers next game is again in Chetwynd Friday January 16th
