In an effort to reduce the impact of the current market conditions, effective January first, glass food containers will no longer be recycled, in the Peace River Regional District.

Lindsay Heal, the General Manager of the Fort St. John Eco-Depot notes again, the world economic crisis has had a devastating impact, on recycling efforts, right across the country.

She says all recycable materials, with the exception of newspapers, collected in our region, have become worthless.

As a result she says plastics, tin and glass are no longer being accepted at the mills… which begs the question, why focus only on glass…?

It’s anticipated the changes could be in place, for six months to a year…

Glass beverage containers with a deposit…such as beer, juice and pop bottles…will still be recycled, at the local bottle depots in the Peace Region, including the one in Fort St. John.
