According to the latest report from Canada Mortgage and Housing, apartment vacancy rates in Fort St. John are more than double what they were last year.
The year-over-year numbers show, the local rate in October was 9.1%, as opposed to just 3.9%, in October of 2007.
The Fort St. John rate is also the highest, on a 26-city BC survey, which shows Dawson Creek headed in the opposite direction. It’s rate in October was down to 1 point two from 2 point seven percent at the same time last year and, it is just slightly above the provincial average of one percent, for centres with a population of 10 thousand or more.
The lowest rate in the province is found in the Vancouver Island retirement community of Parksville, at .2%. Prospective renters will also find Salmon Arm, Kelowna, Kamloops, Victoria and Vancouver have challenging rates, of .5% or less. `
