Chetwynd Secondary School teacher coach Helen Toppin was honoured for her 24 years of dedication and commitment to student athletes at the first-ever BC School Sports recognition dinner held in Richmond Friday.

"The work Helen does for this community and its students is invaluable," says Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom. "Her commitment to nurture her student athletes and to help them to reach their potential builds the foundation for their successful futures. Congratulations to Helen. I’m pleased she’s being acknowledged for her contributions and dedication."

Eighteen coaches from across the province were honoured during the dinner where they received a framed certificate and a BC150 commemorative book titled British Columbia: Spirit of the People, chronicling the province’s history. The coaches were chosen after being profiled on the BC School Sports website. Each month a male and female coach is profiled in recognition of their commitment and hard work based on submissions from athletic associations, member schools and sport commissions.

Each profiled coach is also entered to win the provincial coach of the year award. Nominations for a female and male coach of the year are received by March 31 and selections are made by the Awards and Scholarship Committee based on years of service, the sport and the regions they represent.

BC School Sports is a voluntary non-profit society with a membership of 400 schools. It is independent from government and school boards. Its mission is to provide governance for interschool competition, encourage student participation in extra-curricular athletics and assist schools in the development and delivery of those programs.
