Fort Hotel developer Michael Seo has now confirmed to city hall that he will appear before city council at next Tuesday’s meeting to discuss his demolition plans for the Fort Hotel.
Council documents indicate Seo plans to demolish the building through a multi-phase process. Phase one will see the former Cowboys Saloon area of the building demolished.
The portions of the building fronting 100th street and 100th avenue would be demolished in the second phase. An assessment would then be made to determine the viability of keeping the remaining portion of the building, which fronts the alleyway parallel to 100th avenue.
A report from Seo’s engineer suggests crews will face special challenges in the first phase of demolition, as the roof over the Cowboy’s Saloon area is in a state of partial collapse.
The report also indicates the building has been broken into and occupied, and will need to be checked stringently for occupants as demolition is carried out. Other dangers include a partially flooded basement and uncertainty regarding the composition of structural joints in the building.
No timeline has been provided for the demolition. The city has forwarded the plan to its solicitor "for the purpose of legal action should the owner not prosecute the work in accordance with City Council’s wishes."
