The Fort St. John Fire Department drove through some areas of the city with their lights and sirens on tonight to remind people to practice their fire safety plans and keep their fire detection equipment up to date.

The department was asking residents to test the batteries in their smoke alarms at 7:30 tonight, then evacuate their homes according to their fire safety plan.

Captain Greg Nicoll, Fire Prevention Officer for Fort St. John, says the drill was intended to get families to review their fire safety plan, especially with the younger members of the family.

Captain Nicoll also says Fire Prevention Week is a great time to get your furnace serviced to avoid carbon monoxide leakage, and to test the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector as well.
