Canfor has announced the closure of the Tackama Plywood Operation in Fort Nelson.
The plant will close at the end of October after the existing log and veneer inventories are depleted. According to Canfor the current market and future outlook for plywood prices are not encouraging. Mark Feldinger is Vice President of Wood Products Manufacturing for Canfor.
Earlier this year Canfor announced the closure of both facilities in Fort Nelson, but then the employees agreed to a pay cut in order to keep the Tackama operation open. Mark says Canfor will try and place employees at other facilities.
Approximately 290 employees will be impacted by the closure, it was estimated earlier this year that another 250 indirect jobs would also be lost.
The Mayors Office in Fort Nelson says they have not been officialy notified about the closure by Canfor and would not comment at this time.
