The BC Transmission Corporation and Tree Canada are hoping to make Fort St. John a little greener.
At a ceremony Monday in the city, the two groups announced over $10,000 dollars in funding to plant trees in lieu of those lost to the pine beetle. The trees will be Engleman Spruce, a Pine Beetle-resistant conifer.
The city plans to put the trees between the Alaska Highway and the frontage road to beautify and provide a sound barrier for businesses along the highway. Additionally, Tree Canada and the BCTC are offering reduced rates for residents looking to replace a beetle-killed Lodgepole Pine on their property with a new tree.
In a one time deal, BCTC will subsidize $80 dollars of the cost of a tree which would normally retail for $150 dollars. Christian Walli, Community Advisor for Tree Canada, says planting a new tree can have benefits beyond helping clean the air.
