BC sees interprovincial population influx

The latest numbers from Stats Canada indicate BC’s strong foothold in the mining and Oil & Gas sectors has contributed to a net increase in population due to interprovincial migration.

BC saw a net interprovincial gain of nearly 1700 people in the 2nd quarter of this year. The biggest net population inflow to BC came from the province of Ontario, which lost nearly 800 residents to BC’s bolstering economy and job market.

That gain was second only to Alberta’s, which gained nearly 7000 people this year from interprovincial moves.

Statistics Canada’s latest numbers for the economy indicate that mining and Oil & Gas extraction continued to contribute to an increased GDP this year, with an increase of over 4 percent in those sectors in July over the previous month’s level.
