Peace River Regional District chair Karen Goodings is hopeful new provincial funding will help improve telecommunications in remote areas of our region.
At the wrap of the Union of BC Municipalities Meeting last week, Premier Gordon Campbell announced two new initiatives to improve connectivity for those living in remote and rural areas of BC.
The “Connecting Citizens” program will provide up to $50,000 per community to deliver improved telecommunications coverage to remote communities on the province.
Goodings says she’s pleased that the province is beginning to address the district’s connectivity issues. However, she says, it remains to be seen how the funding will apply to unincorporated regions of the district.

Telus’ recent shutoff of analog services Canada-wide left some residents with satellite phones as their only means of telecommunication.
