Police have just released more information regarding an accident on Rose Prairie road that has left a section of the road closed for nearly 20 hours.
Police say a southbound tractor trailer unit carrying a backhoe jackknifed when it attempted to navigate the first turn of the Montney Coulees. The unit then crossed the centre line and collided head on with a Pontiac car.
A Dodge pickup following the car was able to swerve away from the collision, but not before the back of the Pontiac car made contact with his pickup. The driver of the Pontiac car, a 75-year-old Rose Prairie man, was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Dodge truck was not injured.
An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and two RCMP Collision Analysts have been on scene since dawn today working at a scene analysis, but the road still remains closed to the public at this hour. Police slate the re-opening of the road for 6pm tonight. In the meantime, they’re asking the public to use the Montney and 256 Roads as detours.
