Local Cities win Green Awards

Premier Campbell announced the winners of this year’s LiveSmart BC Green Cities Awards today in Penticton.

This is the second year the government has given out the awards, recognizing communites taking action on climate change and other environmental issues.

And, in the category of communities under 15 hundred, the district of Taylor is the winner, with Pouce Coupe mentioned as a finalist. Taylor was awarded the prize for among other things, it’s energy efficient retrofits, and a pledge to plant 15 thousand trees. For winning, Taylor gets a 25 thousand dollar grant.

Meanwhile, Dawson Creek also won the Green Cities award for cities from 10 to 25 thousand. The city is noted for it’s solar hot water systems, and green buildings policy, and gets a 50 thousand dollar award.

In total, 475 thousand dollars was awarded amongst the 9 winning communities.

Additionally, Dawson Creek and the West Moberly first nation are among six BC communites awarded 20 thousand dollars to further develop solar initiatives.
