The City has decided not to waive building permit fees for a local hotel destroyed by fire.

Nova Star Hotel owner Daniel Bae presented a request before city council in August that his building and plumbing permit fees for the reconstruction of the razed hotel be waived. Although the hotel was under construction at the the time of the fire, the original building and plumbing permits issued have now expired, meaning that Bae must pay the fees a second time.

Bae says his insurance company refuses to cover the cost of the new fees, which amount to approximately $20,000 dollars.

Councillor Lori Ackerman says that although the city empathizes with Mr. Bae, council feels there are other avenues for compensation. [asset|aid=244|format=mp3player|formatter=asset_bonus|title=Lori Ackerman – Nova Star_1_Pub.mp3]

In its consultations with other communities on the matter, the city noted that no other communities had waived permit fees under these types of circumstances.
