Starting today, Canadians can opt to have their number striken from the lists of telemarketers.
The CRTC’s new Do Not Call List will function in much the same way as its counterpart in the US, allowing certain groups such as charities and political parties permission to contact those on the list. However, these groups will also be restricted in the hours they can call during.
After signing up, the CRTC will allow telemarketers 31 days to get the number off their lists. After that, the CRTC will levy fines of up to $15,000 for each call to numbers on the list.
Unfortunately, the flood of eager people signing up for the the CRTC’s Do Not Call List has clogged both the signup phone line and website, prompting the CRTC to ask Canadians to have patience and try again later.
