The provincial government has released some figures for its economic benefits agreements with the Blueberry First Nations and 4 constituent Nations of Treaty 8.
The program shares profits from mining, oil and gas, and forestry activity on traditional Treaty 8 and Blueberry land.
Since signing in June of 2006, the Blueberry River First Nation has received 7.52 million in lump sum and annual payments. The nations of Doig River, Fort Nelson, Prophet River and West Moberly have together received $19.78 million since signing to the agreement in March of this year.
Each treaty group has signed to a 15-year term under the agreement.
The province says the payments will enable First Nations to better participate in the local economy and improve their communities.
