Insurance claims for local crop producers are beginning to come in, and as expected, the number of farmers filing is high this year.
Dry weather this year has made for poor growing conditions for local grain and hay farmers. With most of the Peace area harvest completed, farmers are looking at approximately half of what their normal yields are.
Simon North, crop insurance representative with the provincial Agriculture and Lands Ministry, says rains in late August helped improve growth for some crops, but hindered others trying to harvest.
The dry summer wasn’t the only factor affecting crops around the peace. A scourge of grasshoppers also severly damaged hayland; although grain crops weren’t hit as badly by the pests.
