Federal Meat Inspection

Accoding to an orgnaized labor report, BC is one of the provinces where federal involvement in meat inspection programs could end, if the Conservatives are re-elected, on October 14th.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada claims, the Tories will move, after a secret Treasury Board report forecast a three million dollar saving, by scrapping federal delivery of provincial meat inspection programs in B-C, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
A Union spokesperson says Ottawa administers programs which oversee sanitation and other safety regulations and — given the national outbreak of listeriosis — now is “not” the time to consider such cuts.
Instead, the union wants to see the hiring of one-thousand additional inspectors and veterinarians, and the end of any self-policing, by the meat producing and packing industry.
